Of all the characters duels, Yugi's were by far the most impactful to the story, as would be expected for the protagonist of the series. Although he didn't get any character developing duels like his round against Kaiba in the Duelist Kingdom, he consistently showed in every duel just why he was crowned the King of Games in the first place, even if some of them weren't very eventful. The four-way duel to decide who would duel in the semi-finals should have been much more interesting than it was, as free for all duels aren't very common in the Yu-Gi-Oh! While the cards played by Marik, Joey, Kaiba, and Yugi didn't blow anyone's socks off, what really shines in this duel is each player's motivations for who they will attack with their monsters since the two who are knocked out first will face each other, while those who come first and second will face each other in a separate duel. This results in some interesting trickery between players, where attacks are redirected and players are saved from defeat as each player tries to manipulate who they will face in the final rounds. The duel against a Marik-controlled-Joey to try and win Yami's Millenium Puzzle should have been more eventful than it was, but the duel itself was bogged down by constant monologues from Marik and Yugi switching places with Yami so he could try to get through to his best friend, which he obviously does in the end. It's another "power of friendship" duel that, while not terrible as it shows what Marik would do with Joey's deck, is far too stretched out and could have been condensed into a couple of episodes rather than being a four-part duel.
